In 2001, the American Dental Association required Lewis & Hickey’s full Architectural and Project Management services for the fit out of a state-of-the-art dental facility within a newly refurbished building in the historic centre of Prague.

With the aim of creating a state of the art specialised unit which reduces patients' stress levels, Lewis & Hickey worked closely with user groups PACE and four artists to incorporate an extensive range of passive and interactive artworks into the design. A friendly, informal and welcoming healthcare facility has been achieved which efficiently and effectively provides for all the latest dental treatments as well as the postgraduate research and teaching requirements of the Edinburgh Dental Institute.

Lewis & Hickey played the leading role in the commissioning and integration of numerous works by four artists, which were designed to create a relaxed, fun and welcoming atmosphere. Artworks include a camera obscura in the waiting area and fibre optic stellar constellation lights above treatment chairs. Winner of a Commendation in both the Edinburgh Architectural Association Awards 1997 and the Saltire Society Arts and Crafts in Architecture Competition 1999.
