Lewis & Hickey were commissioned by Gleeson Homes to provide master planning / zoning and landscape plans to gain outline permission for residential use of this former Victorian Psychiatric Hospital site on green belt land, in the South of England. Lewis & Hickey, in consultation with landscape experts and traffic engineers produced a series of strategy plans, which were then exhibited in a series of public consultations to gain local support for the redevelopment. The Lewis & Hickey master plan was to zone the site into distinct areas but also to create a village feel with a central focus of a cricket green with shops, pub and fitness centre.
Retirement Homes (in conjunction with 'Courtyard Developments') and a
Nursing Home were zoned at the top of the sloping site where the
hospital buildings were located. These were all orientated to take in
the views to the South Downs and to create landmark features visible
from within the development. Further feature buildings were then added
to the other zones to create vistas and focal points linking the
'village' together.
The density of this site had to be kept very low with landscaping being of upper most importance as this was considered an area of outstanding beauty in green belt land. Roadways/ paths/ cycle paths and buildings were incorporated into a landscape plan, which utilised existing woodlands, ponds and tracks to minimise the development impact. Lewis & Hickey successfully negotiated an outline permission for this site. Launch Case Study for Hellingley House (PDF) |
