Headquarters Buildings

In 2002, Sony held an open design competition to reorganise and extend their existing building complex to accommodate 7 of their different operational companies. Lewis & Hickey won this competition, beating many of the country's renowned office designers.

Our concept conceived the cross fertilisation of Sony cultures through modular growth and expansion within the framework of an office village. A series of atriums in the existing buildings, created by covering open courtyards, added floor space and provided areas for informal and relaxed interaction. The design accommodated further linking atriums should the company grow but the possibility of a reduced workforce was also allowed for, with the option to sub-let and separate part of the office complex. A central 'street' was utilised to link the atria and create various communal areas and interaction points for the staff in the form of several cafes, a restaraunt, shop and gymnasium, generating a social office complex.
