LA Fitness commissioned Lewis & Hickey to transform this Cinema located on the Washway Road, Sale, Manchester, into a modern health and fitness centre. The Grade II listed Pyramid Theatre incorporates a unique neo-Egyptian auditorium designed and built in the 1930’s. When it was acquired by LA Fitness in Spring 2001 it was in a severely dilapidated and derelict state. It was clear that to save this building and restore it to its former glory much painstaking work would be required, all in close liaison with English Heritage and the Cinema Trust.

The Auditorium has been kept as open and as light as possible to create a welcoming space. The different levels are identified with the use of contrasting colours and textures. The reinstated vaulted ceiling and listed cornice were finished in gold to recreate their original splendour, and specialist coloured lighting effects were projected onto the ceiling to create an unforgettable first impression of the club. The drama was enhanced by installing a full height glazed view into the new swimming pool. The building now houses a high-technology training and sports facility including a state of the art Gymnasium, Cardio-Theatre, Swimming Pool with Steam and Sauna Room, Aerobics Room and Static-cycling. Other facilities include instruction, changing and relaxation areas as well as a specialist Pilate and Yoga Studio, a Crèche, Treatment and Therapy Rooms.
