The Civic Trust 2012 Awards held in Edinburgh on the 2nd March presented Lewis and Hickey with the ‘Community Recognition’ Award for the Westfield Folkhouse Youth Centre scheme in Mansfield.
The Grade II listed building has been lovingly restored and a contemporary new-build extension integrated, to deliver a new youth centre facility designed to meet the needs and aspirations of young people and promote their personal development. County Council, District Council, myplace funders and the voluntary sector partners were fully engaged and involved through a series of consultations including workshops, presentations and interviews.
The project was also shortlisted for the Selwyn Goldsmith Award for Universal Design, with access noted as extremely good with provision above and beyond the minimum standards.
The Civic Trust Awards scheme was established in 1959 to recognise the very best in architecture, design, planning, landscape and public art. Awards are given to projects that make an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the built environment. demonstrating an excellence in architecture or design, sustainability, inclusive design and provide a positive social, cultural, environmental or economic benefit to the local community.
