A proposed student residential scheme on a site north of Guildford town centre is the latest Scape Student Living scheme to receive planning permission.
Lewis and Hickey were appointed by HG Capital Investments to design the scheme along with AB Rogers Design who are have been appointed by Scape Student Living to develop their unique student concept. The new accommodation will provide an opportunity to inject life into an underutilised site and area of transition where regeneration is already occurring.
The proposed scheme will provide 141 bedrooms all with en-suite facilities arranged in 6-8 bed cluster apartments with shared kitchen facilities as well as self contained studio apartments. The building also includes a central hub containing Management Suite, meeting rooms and office space; as well break out space and a ‘Study Zone’ for students in a cutting edge contemporary setting.
Our design approach was to provide a building that seeks to establish a contemporary residential aesthetic in a sensitive and respectful manner and that doesn’t attempt to adopt quasi-domestic references through small ‘feature’ windows, pitched roofs, projecting balconies, porches etc. While the building does not take a direct architectural cue for its appearance, (in the absence of a prevailing character source) the building proposed is of high quality and design such that it will contribute and enhance the overall appearance of the area.
Lewis and Hickey were involved in extensive pre-application consultation with Guildford Borough Council’s planning department as well as public consultation with adjacent landowners, local residents and the Guildford Society.
