Charteris Land is part of the large campus (originally the Moray House School of Education) which sits within Edinburgh's Old Town World Heritage Site. The University of Edinburgh took over the School of Education in 1998: Lewis & Hickey have been involved in the conversion and refurbishment of Paterson’s Land, the Nursery and Moray House itself.
Charteris Land was won following a competitive pre-qualification, tender, presentation and interview process. Lewis & Hickey developed the brief and design through RIBA Stages, working closely with different departmental heads from the School of Education and Estates & Building departments.
The works provide new accommodation to co-locate the School of Education’s art, music, science and technology departments under one roof. This includes new wood, metal and plastics workshops, biology, chemistry and physics laboratories, music rehearsal and performance spaces, a recording studio, computer laboratories and art studios as well as staff and student facilities. The existing building was furbished on four levels but there is also a new extension providing up to date classrooms with all the latest technology.
