Lewis & Hickey have led the design and delivery of an iconic redevelopment in Mansfield named ‘myplace @ Westfield Folkhouse’. The extensive refurbishment has transformed an existing Georgian property, integrating a new-build extension and external activity areas. The facilities provide exemplar youth and community services, in a vibrant environment. The centre has been designed to inspire learning and development in young people alongside sports and social activities.
The new-build is a modern design to avoid a pastiche approach and is adjoined to the listed building, ensuring that its contemporary approach blended harmoniously with the historic building. This multi-level centre focuses its internal spaces around one main activity area at each level. These areas are used for general social activities, and are within a light and spacious environment.
Externally, the space incorporates an ‘urban edge’ division, a landscape designed to promote full use of the exterior environment, with a contemporary youth zone to one side and sensory gardens on the other. The solid division allows these two distinctively different outdoor areas to co-exist next to each other. Activities include a multi-use games area, outdoor gym, seating facilities, graffiti walls and a petanque ball zone.
Winner of many awards including the 'Community Recognition Award' at the 2012 Civic Trust Awards.
